Fundamental studies of dye interactions within sol-gel matrices and with surfactants in solution, using molecular spectroscopic methods.  Chemical sensors, with emphasis on sol-gel based sensing platforms, including aerogel-platform gas sensors.

Research interests focus on the realization of novel advanced composites for nanochemical applications in chemical sensing and photonics, such as the synthesis and extensive characterization of organic monomers and polymers on the surface of or within inorganic host assemblies including clays, zeolites, and mesoporous materials.
